Neomodern Architecture
Neomodern architecture is a style in architecture emerged around the 1970s, after the end of modern architecture. Most forms of neomodern architecture adopted from modern architectural forms, but the formation of modern architecture are reprocessed into a more artistic form by adding several additional shapes and detailed ornaments, both in terms of structural and color selection. The reprocessing of the basic forms of modern architecture create a new architectural style that is no longer monotonous. Especially with the inclusion of elements of art in architecture such as composition, emphasis, and rhythm. Neomodern architecture is a stream in the world of architecture that is more expressing modern architecture.
Since this neomodern architectural style began to develop at the beginning of the 21st century, this style has general characteristics that are hi-tech, complex form, futuristic, and a facade that is more aesthetic but not as complex as classical architecture.
Some of the architects who adhere to the neomodern style include morphosis, kishokurokawa, norman foster, and Renzo piano. And the pioneer of this movement was Charles Jencks.
Meanwhile, Post Modern Architecture is a style created as a result of a protest and criticism of the existence of modern architecture. This style is more emphatic in opposing modern architecture than neomodern. If Neomodern is a modern architecture whose artistic values should have been restored, then post modern architecture is a mixture of modern and neo-classical architectural ideas. Post modern architecture has historical value but still futuristic, has regional characteristics but remains elite among populists.
Reported from Charles Jencks’s book, The Language of Post Modern Architecture stands on the premise that “a new style and approach” is about to appear, arising out of the architecture of the last 20 years. This “style and approach” is calles “Post-Modern” because it derives by a process of inversion and modification that has led to a variety of departures from modernism. The short definition of a post-modern building given is, “one which speaks on at least two levels at once: to other architects and a concerned minority who care about specifically architectural meanings, and to the public at large, or the local inhabitants who care about other issues concerned with comfort, traditional building, and a way of life.”
In my opinion, nowadays architects can easily realize their designs according to their wishes, for example; if you want to build a wide-span but column-free building, it is possible now because of the discovery of new building materials / materials that can be used to make it real according to the architects and consumers.
The availability of the latest materials with sophisticated technology, encourage the architects to be more free to create through their work. Most of these modern architectural works are in the form of high-rise buildings that rise as if they want to continue to stretch as high as possible. Especially with the use of materials such as concrete, the appearance of a modern architectural work looks very stiff. Modern architectural works can be said to be monotonous because their designs are mostly boxy from the plan to three-dimensional form, coupled with repeated façade designs without incorporating rhythmic elements.
That's why neomodern architecture is needed because this style changes the monotonous architectural style to be more aesthetic. We can also see the artistic value, but still not overdo it and maintenance of today's technology.
